About "My Time To Shine"

Montgomery County has selected the award-winning nonprofit, Fresh Artists, to design and install selected K-12 artwork by Montgomery County public school children throughout the new Justice Center. Fresh Artists is an organization with the unique mission to empower K-12 children in low-income public schools, to become philanthropists through their art-making, to install their artwork in highly visible and unexpected places, and to deliver innovative art programming and much-needed art materials to qualifying public schools in need.

For a school to qualify for Fresh Artists’ support, it must have a full-time Art teacher on staff, be struggling with shortages in arts funding, and between 70% and 100% of the student body qualifies for FRL.

In light of this ground-breaking opportunity for children to make art for the new Justice Center, Fresh Artists has designed a special project to include the participation of ALL K-12 Montgomery County public schools, including schools that do not meet Fresh Artists’ threshold of 70%+ FRL.

"My Time to Shine" is an innovative art challenge that celebrates our world emerging from the challenging COVID-19 years. Although not eliminated entirely, most people are out and about, back to school, feeling more positive and eager to recover their physical and emotional health and exercise their creativity… this project encourages and supports the spread of optimism and the potential we all have to share our gifts through our action. The "My Time to Shine" Project invites Montgomery County children to make a portrait of themselves as the Sun - beaming and shining health-giving, hopeful, happy light in the world. A time of new possibilities and growth. A time to contribute to our community.

Fresh Artists' "My Time to Shine" All-Call for the Justice Art Project is inspired by the hundreds of unsolicited drawings and paintings of “artful suns” sent to the eponymous, award-winning “newsmagazine", CBS Sunday Morning, by creative people from around the world. This 26-year-old weekly television show begins each program with a trumpet fanfare and their distinctive smiling, golden sun logo and features several different arty suns each week.

You are all invited to participate

We are inviting all Art teachers in ALL Montco traditional public and charter schools to:

  • Participate in the celebration of the new Justice Center by having all or some of their students make their own, original Artful Sun.
  • Each school will pledge to have a school-wide exhibition of their students’ original "My Time To Shine" artwork in their school this spring.
  • The entire school community (students, staff, family members, and community) will vote for their one “Favorite Sun”.
  • Their Art teacher will send the winning original “Favorite Sun” artwork, along with a completed Artwork License and Permission Form to Fresh Artists for scanning, replication, and consideration for inclusion in the Justice Center installation. Then this original artwork will be returned to the Art Teachers. The Artwork License and Permission Form must be completed by the student's Parent or Guardian.
  • The plan is to include large-scale reproductions of the students' artwork in the installation of “My Time to Shine” at the Montgomery County Justice Center.
